M&M SOUL FOOD - CARSON, CA

I had forgotten about M&M Soul Food. There used to be one up in North Long Beach but they were always out of this or that, hard to order. This location is different though, and I'm told it's a different owner.

A few of us ended up here after the Jiu Jitsu tournament the other night. The place was neat and tidy, big A rating on the window, and the service was excellent. At the last moment, I saw they had oxtails on the menu so I went with it.
Lean oxtails, how I like'em... and at a soul food restaurant, of course I want gravy all over.
The succotash was made in a pork broth, it had to be, because it fucking DE-LISH. The yams and and red beans were good too. I like when all the sides are equally good.

Check this place out, not too far off the 405 in Carson!

GOAT'S LEG SOUP

Submitted by Rizky Mandra - Jakarta, Indonesia:

As promised, here is a glimpse of what we Jakartans have as culinary hidden treasure.. Goat's Leg Soup.. Thats just the direct translation of the actual banner / main menu, but they offer EVERY part of a goat for you to choose..
The first thing you do when you get in the place (its a roadside hawker kind of place), is for you to choose what "meat" you want.. You could pick anything you desire from goat's meat, stomach, lungs, leg, ear, eyes, testicles, and even brain..

Once you collect all the bits you wanted, then the seller would diced it up in to bite size pieces and add in a (diced) whole tomato to freshen things up..
After that, the seller would pour in a milk and broth based soup (all the meat etc. are boiled in that broth previously) and add in some salt, pepper, vinegar, scallions, and fried shallots...

Thats how my bowl of dinner looks like. It got a piece of goats leg, lungs, stomach, and 2 piece of intestines. As condiments, that vegetable oil-margarine in the background, and some lime wedges.. Add to taste.. Eat it up with a plate of rice..
There you have it Nelson.. A dish some friend of mine dubbed "the heart attack soup"
Have a pleasant summer holiday..

THE HATER REPPING

BAIT

My mom sends me photos like this to get me to move back to Hawaii.

That's her famous tempura; shrimp and veggies from their garden. Carrots, string beans and zucchini.

Chilled noodles in the background for Zarusoba, eat them by dipping into a sauce.

DAVE'S BURGERS - LONG BEACH

I dig this place. When Makonabe and Motoyan were here the last time, I brought them to Dave's Burgers since they're constantly on a American Cheeseburger Rampage when visiting.
Makonabe actually swore that this was the best burger he so far in CA. I think he had a double cheese burger.
I had a grilled chicken sandwich, I didn't want to be farty-pants later that night. Check this place out, you won't regret it. If you've been around Long Beach, I'm sure you've seen the sign on Atlantic in Bixby Knolls.

THINGS I SAW IN THE MORNING

Finally caught a photo of that old Moto Guzzi guy I see commuting every morning. Rain or shine, this guy is a trooper. If he's putt-putting a little slow for you, he'll even signal for you to pass in his own lane.
Eric Webb stopped by with a new pick-up he scored too.

THE REAL NASI PADANG EXPERIENCE

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned some Indonesian food that I had been really impressed with. Lucky for us, Rizky Mandra submitted a post this morning and gives us a look at the real Nasi Padang experience:

Submitted by Rizky in Jakarta, Indonesia:
Just wanted to share with you, how we in Indonesia enjoy Nasi Padang... Attached picture is a glimpse of how the waiter brings you a portion of every menu they serve that day.
Another picture will show you how the served it all on your table so you can choose what you fell like chewing today.. Various meat-poultry-fish cooked in various type of curry, and also sambals.. Dont forget that they also served fish head curry... Snapper heads are the most common option of fish in Indonesia..
I also attached my plate of lunch today.. Ayam pop (that pale slow steamed then deep fried for 5 second with that red chilli sauce), curried cow brain, green chilli sambals, and deep fried cow skin crackers.. Yum!!
Also attched is a picture of my FXR motor in it upgrades.. Prep-ing her up for some summertime fun...
Guess that's all for now.. Have some fun in the sun up there..

KUMAR'S ISLAND MARKET - ANAHEIM, CA

Been driving by this place for months and wondering what was going on. Street signage said Polynesian food, so had to investigate.

Basically it's a Samoan market that serves hot lunch too. Got a chunk of taro, lamb ribs, lamb curry and turkey tail. The lamb ribs and turkey tail was made with a kalbi sauce. $8 for the whole plate, they go by weight.

Overall it's pretty good, little on the fatty side but I'd say check it out. Gotta get there before noon if you want more choices though!

PEPE TIME #66

I have a friend named Pepe. He's pretty funny and I like to keep a log of all the funny things he says and does. Enjoy
DO THE HUMPTY HUMP

I can't remember exactly how this conversation started, but I clearly remember how it ended...

Nator: you need a disguise or something to go to that place.

Me: yeah, the nose and glasses and be all 'stop whatcha doin' cause I'm about to ruin'

Nator: haha humpty dance, do the hump...

Pepe: was that really his nose?
